Raptor is the story of a hermaphrodite in the world just past the fall of the Roman empire, and it is easily my favorite of his works. Spangle starts with a confederate and union soldier meeting as the Civil War ends, finding no cause to hate each other they ride out and find themselves joining a circus. The Journeyer was his first deep dive after the surprise success of Aztec and he decided to pick a new time and it tells the story of Marco and the family Polo as they travel into the East. He was surprised by its success and it changed him to basically devoting himself to historical novels. This is the usual entry point to his work. Jennings' novels are well-researched: he lived for 12 years in Mexico to research the Aztec novels, traveled the Balkans while researching Raptor, and joined nine circus troupes during the writing of Spangle.Īztec is his best known work, there were more Aztec books but all save one weren't by him and its pretty obvious. His output was not prolific, but that was due to the research he felt was necessary.įrom wikipedia: His novels were known for their historical detail and occasionally graphic content. And very, very few authors have ever made me feel like they were embedded in a lost time and culture as thoroughly as he could. The only living author in his wheelhouse is Ken Follett, and not enough people who love Follett find Jennings. He doesn't get enough attention these days.
